Passive Solar

Passive solar consists of two initiatives, mitigating the urban heat island effect and information on installing solar water heaters. These initiatives combat energy inefficiency by maximizing the benefits of the natural environment and using tax credits to finance solar water heaters, which according to the U.S. Department of Energy can save to 50% to 85% more money per month compared to electric water heaters water heaters (p. 10, 2003).

By simply knowing where the sun shines the brightest and longest, residents and the neighborhoods can block unwanted heat with free trees or turn the heat into needed hot water. These initiatives will improve aesthetics, comfort, property value, and energy efficiency of the neighborhood.
